Prototypes

We have been through a few cycles of developing prototypes and evaluating them in pilot studies and experiments with basic skills students. Prototypes are listed below, with most recent first.

  • SkillSum06, September 2005: this is the final version used in the Final Evaluation experiments.
  • SkillSum05, June 2005: used in Pilot07. The NLG component has new content selection rules based on knowledge acquired from literacy and numeracy experts and the study of technical term usage from Pilot06.
  • SkillSum04, October 2004: completely rewritten NLG component conforming to our new SkillSum architecture. Improved preference rules in microplanner to favour choice of unambiguous discourse cue phrases in the control model and short, frequent but ambiguous ones in the enhanced readability model. Used in Pilot05.
  • SkillSum03, September 2004: the long Target Skills assessments were removed from this version and the shorter "screeners" were improved. The NLG component was modified to reduce the length of reports and explanations of students' results were no longer based on levels in the Adult Basic Skills Curriculum. Used in Pilot04.
  • SkillSum02, June 2004: The NLG component was adapted to output interactive reports with buttons for browsing sections. Used in Pilot03.
  • SkillSum01, April/May 2004: used in Pilots Pilots01 and 02, it retained the Target Skills assessments and also, as an alternative, shorter "screener" assessments. NLG component was adapted to produce two kinds of reports: (a) short reports for students and (b) longer reports for tutors explaining the level the student attained in each skill assessed.
  • SkillSum00, December 2003: long Target Skills literacy and numeracy assessments and generation of long reports based on initial knowledge acquisition from experts and the Adult Basic Skills Curriculum. The NLG component chooses relevant examples of activities according to individual students' results. Example output from this early version.
