• To understand general self-managing behaviours for monitoring and diagnosing software failures; and more specifically:
  • To characterise self-healing mechanisms as monitoring and switching problems;
  • To provide requirements-driven self-configuring mechanisms for managing the high-variability software systems and business processes;
  • To argue the continuous satisfaction of evolving security requirements as a self-protecting mechanism through systematic argumentations and runtime verifications;
  • To achieve self-tuning by satisfying dynamic stakeholder goals and preferences through the PID controlled theory, which has been applied to Web systems.
• These self-managing mechanisms demand a systematic engineering infrastructure:
  • To support traceability from quality requirements to the software architectures across the development lifecycle through reverse engineering, software reuse, normalisation and aspect-orientation;
  • To visualise the bottlenecks of software systems and processes in terms of both productivity and performance.
