Here are some colourful
(though not necessarily beautiful)
aperiodic tilings of the plane ...

The Ammann-Beenker (octagonal) tiling
This tiling has eightfold symmetry and consists of two tiles, a square and a 45-degree rhombus, which here are coloured yellow and greeen, respectively.
(Size: 711 kB)
The chair tiling
The colours encode the four different orientations of the basic chair tile.
(Size: 186 kB)
The sphinx tiling
The colours encode the six different orientations of the basic sphinx tiles.
Tiles that are related by reflection at the vertical direction share the same colour.
