2005 "Up against the wall" advise
  • Ask colleagues for opinion of your work; write papers, communicate with your community.
  • Switch amongst parallel tasks.
  • Find an "informal network" and use it.
  • Don't sit with a small specific problem - reach out.
  • Ask your group what they've already done - don't reinvent the wheel.
  • Force yourself to write something.
  • Try to vary your point of view.
  • Work hard.
  • Go to gatherings like this - network!
  • Take every opportunity for feedback - then use it.
  • Ideas can come from unexpected places.
  • Build collaborations early - including unconventional ones.
  • Read each paper 3 times (5 if important) and make notes.
  • Find a topic that really, really interests you.
  • Make contact with gurus and find ways to cooperate.
  • Be open minded.
  • Participate in real projects.
