Information about the Centre

The Centre for the History of the Mathematical Sciences was founded in 2001. It is actively involved in developing new historiographical methods and new means of promoting and communicating the history of mathematics.

The purpose of the Centre is to
  • Conduct research in the history of the mathematical sciences, covering pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education
  • Provide graduate research training in the history of mathematics leading to the award of research degrees
  • Lead the teaching at the OU of the history of the mathematical sciences, at undegraduate and postgraduate level, and offer historical provision across the Faculty's curriculum
The Centre intends to host a conference every year in some aspect of the history of mathematics and to organise a series of smaller meetings and seminars.
