Mathematics Online Project
Aim
The Mathematics Online Project (MOL) is based within the Mathematics and Statistics Department of the Open University, UK.
Our primary aim is to develop and support both infrastructure and content for online learning and teaching of mathematical material at degree and postgraduate level.
We are confident that our work will be widely applicable wherever mathematics and computer users interact and that there will be spin-offs for the getting other non-textual information online.
The Open University (OU) is building on over 35 years experience of providing high-quality, home-based education to many millions of students by moving much of its teaching and learning online to a supported, blended Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) using Moodle.
Thus the focus of our current interests is the tight integration of mathematical teaching and learning resources into this VLE, including user-friendly support for the creation, communication and utilisation of mathematical material.
In the OU context, 'mathematical material at degree and postgraduate level' covers courses from Openings and Level 1 to Masters and thesis writing and it goes across all subject areas including pure maths, applied maths, maths education, statistics, the arts and sciences.
Our work may also be directly applicable to the online needs of other subject areas that use non-textual communication, such as Music or Chemistry, and to non-Latin languages such as Greek and Mandarin.
Areas of interest
Our interests include:
- Display, storage and use of mathematical notation in web-based resources
- Consolidation of flexible input methods for all applications
- Computer algebra assisted online assessment systems
- Synchronous and asynchronous online teaching and learning
- ICT for written mathematical communication, the core of the OU system for high-quality, home-based teaching and learning
- Full integration of mathematical learning objects with teaching and assessment materials to support independent learners and teachers
- Online subject matter that uses mathematical or other structured non-textual content
