Until about 2015, my research was focussed on the comprehension of semantic models, with particular reference to the detection of potential redundancy and ambiguity in conceptual models such as Entity-Relationship models and class diagrams, and on issues surrounding the design of object-relational databases.
More recently, my principal interest has been the application of novel interfaces to communicate complex navigation information. I led a project for three Nuffield interns, over the summer of 2011, to assemble a corpus of images of landmarks. The corpus forms the basis of experiments to explore factors affecting our ability to identify distant landmarks.
Current work focusses on extending the prototype corpus and the range of experiments.
Links to my recent publications can be found here. (together with a slightly out-of-date personal profile....!)
As a Programme Director at the Open University, I was responsible, until 2016, for the oversight of our qualifications in Computing & IT, and for the overall undergraduate C&IT curriculum. More recently, I led the design of the Open University's Degree Apprenticeship in Digital and Technology Solutions.
My current teaching includes contributions to a module in IT project and service management, and I have contributed also to the development of several database modules for the postgraduate and undergraduate programmes.
Since 2016, I have been Deputy Head of the School of Computing and Communications, and I am also an active elected member of the University Senate.
I am a Fellow of BCS: the Chartered Institute for IT, a Chartered Membership Assessor and an assessor for academic accreditation. Until 2007, I was also responsible for the University Professional Development Scheme for placement students.
I'm an Ocean Yachtmaster and Cruising Instructor through the Royal Yachting Association, a member of the Royal Institute of Navigation, and - when I get time - I sail my Westerly Oceanlord, OD1.
