David was born and grew up on the English South Coast. He was a Boy Treble and Head Boy at the local Cathedral. He and his family now live in in the South Midlands.
His early career was as an Articled Clerk in a law firm, and then followed a brief period as a seaborne Sailing Instructor.
From 1973-4, David was President of the Oxford Polytechnic Students Union (now Oxford Brookes University)
On leaving the Polytechnic, David worked briefly in administration in a Nottinghamshire Teacher Training College, again at Oxford Polytechnic in the Registry, and then at the Open University as an administrator in the Academic Planning Office under Peter Bristow and Norman Gowar from 1980 to 1982 then in the Open University Registry as Project Liaison Officer for the SRNEW Student Database project.
After working from 1979 in Academic Administration, David joined the Academic Computing Service at the Open University in 1987 as lead IT Trainer.
Working in ACS with consultant Graham Barrett of 'TeamDomino', David took responsibility for delivering training programmes dedicated towards obtaining an effective use of the University's Electronic Publishing programme based around Microsoft's 'Word' on MAC, DOS and Windows platforms. This grew to include managing all the training on a very wide range of software within the IT Training Office until 1996 .
Current work
From 1996 to 2007 David was responsible for the IT Support area in the Maths, Computing and Technology Faculty of the Open University. He now acts as IT Development Manager for the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology. He runs the highly regarded 'Safe Computing' website which provides timely and appropriate security advice for computer users - students and staff at the Open University, and others interested in keeping their personal computers secure against attack.
