Mission Our aim is to engage with practitioner communities and software organisations through empirical studies of actual practice and products in order to derive theory and inform practice. Our focus is evidence-based and process-oriented. Our research approach The Centre For Empirical Studies of Software Development (CESSD) use a range of qualitative approaches, from in situ observation of professional practice to controlled studies. We also use a range of quantitative approaches, including data extraction from software repositories and its visualisation and modelling and simulation. Our approaches include multiple methods, triangulation, and longitudinal studies. Our emphasis is on practice in naturalistic settings, naturally-occurring artefacts, and reports from practitioners.
