Induced Moment in Magnetic Trilayers

When a few atomic planes of a non-magnetic metal are sandwiched between two magnetic layers, an oscillatory magnetic moment is induced in the non-magnetic metal. The induced moment mediates exchange coupling between the magnetic layers and, hence, determines the equilibrium magnetic configuration of the system. Our asymptotic expansion methods allow us to calculate the induced moment analytically with great accuracy and investigate its very interesting behaviour when the two magnetic layers have their magnetic moments rotated with respect to one another by an arbitrary angle (see the figure).
